Very few persons go directly to heaven when they die. Most spend time in Purgatory, preparing their souls to meet GOD. When we pray for them, our prayers help shorten their time in Purgatory. In return, our loved ones or even perfect strangers for whom we pray, will pray for us when they enter heaven.
